The days of North Carolina’s unemployment rate being at or above 11 percent are back. The North Carolina Employment Security Commission recently released it’s numbers for October to show that just over 496,000 people* are unemployed in the Tarheel state.
The NCESC is working hard to get the extension of benefits passed by the federal government into the hands of people in North
Carolina who are about to run out of benefits.
In October of 2008, North Carolina’s jobless rate was at 7 percent.
* The NCESC cannot count ALL unemployed in North Carolina. The number does not accurately reflect:
- Students who could work, but who are not actively seeking work because of school
- Those who have exhausted their unemployment benefits
- Those who are unemployed and have chosen not to leverage their unemployment benefits
- Illegal immigrants who are using state programs funded by taxpayers, but who aren’t contributing to the system
- The self-employed who are ineligible for unemployment benefits
